About Ethereum
Ethereum is the world's most-used programmable blockchain, launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and co-founders. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum supports smart contracts — self-executing programs that run exactly as coded without any possibility of downtime or interference — enabling an entire ecosystem of decentralised apps (dApps). ETH is the native currency used to pay for computation on the network, a cost commonly called 'gas'. In 2022, Ethereum switched from energy-intensive Proof of Work to Proof of Stake via 'The Merge', cutting energy consumption by over 99% and allowing holders to earn rewards by staking ETH to help validate transactions.
