About XRP
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, developed by Ripple Labs to enable fast, cheap cross-border payments and currency exchange. Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, XRP uses a federated consensus protocol — no mining required — allowing transactions to settle in 3–5 seconds for less than a fraction of a cent. Ripple, the company behind XRP, sells the token to financial institutions and uses it as a bridge currency to facilitate real-time gross settlement of international money transfers. XRP was the subject of a high-profile SEC lawsuit launched in 2020; Ripple achieved a partial legal victory in 2023 when a judge ruled retail sales of XRP did not constitute securities offerings.
